October 25, 2018 - Columbus, Ohio, U.S - One wing of the displays at the National Veterans Memorial and Museum photographed Thursday, October 25, 2018 in Columbus, Ohio. The NVMM will open officially to the public on Saturday October 26, 2018. Retired Army Gen. Colin L. Powell will deliver a keynote address about the role of veterans in our country and the innovation, courage and strength they provide communities. The new building, designed by U.S.-based Allied Works Architecture, is a sort of concrete cake. Or as the firm describes it, “Intersecting bands of concrete, arranged in concentric rings, give form to the museum and represent the branches of service that support and strengthen one another.” Architectural Digest called the $82 million, 53, 000-square-foot spiral-like structure one of “the 12 Most Anticipated Buildings of 2018.'' Part of it is a processional that curves up to a rooftop sanctuary that also can be entered from inside. That sanctuary is to be an open-air “civic room” designed for ceremonies and celebrations. Inside, the exhibition galleries follow the building’s curves and tell the veterans story over a historical timeline that runs through 14 themed alcoves that are meant to do what is spelled out at the entrance: “Honor. Connect. Inspire. Educate. (Credit Image: © James D. DeCamp/ZUMA Wire)
