RM2AMHM79–Olaus Magnus was a 16th-century ecclesiastic, cartographer, and historian and in his book 'History of the Northern Peoples' (1555), he writes 'Those who sail up along the coast of Norway to trade or to fish, tell the remarkable story of how a sea serpent or sea dragaon of fearsome size, 200 feet long and 20 feet wide, resides in rifts and caves outside Bergen. On bright summer nights this serpent leaves the caves and fares out to the sea to feed. With its sharp black scales and flaming red eyes, it attacks vessels, grabs and swallows people, as it lifts itself up like a column from the water.'

He was born at Staithside, Whitby, North Yorkshire, in one of the buildings that were built on stilts over the river Esk (now demolished on St Anne's Staithe. Locally he was remember as 'An Honest Man'. His surname is sometimes spelled Lascells. He was court-martialled after the Battle of Preston-pans when his forces lost the battle in 15 minutes.
