Mia Hesse, née Maria Bernoulli (1868–1963), came from a wealthy Basel family of scholars as the daughter of notary Friedrich Bernoulli and was a pioneer of photography in Switzerland. In 1904, she married Hermann Hesse. The couple moved from Basel to the Höri peninsula on Lake Constance. Mia Hesse gave up her career as a photographer.
