Thousands of small fishes, locally called 'puti', are caught in a nearby river. Workers cut and clean the fishes, add salt and then dry them on a bamboo platform in the sun for four to five days. After the fishes are properly dried, they are packaged and sent out for sale in the markets. Dried fish is an important food in the diet in Bangladesh. It accounts for the fourth largest share of fish consumed and is the most accessible type of fish for consumers across all income levels. Dry Fish selling is a major industry nowadays. Bangladesh exports a huge quantity of dry fish every year, greatly contributing to the national economy.
