Venice, Italy. Santa Maria dellaSalute is emblematic of the city. It's dome dominates the land between the Grand Canal and the Bacino di San Marco, built in 1630, to respond to a virulent outbreak of the plague. The design, , By Baldassare Lungho, was completed just before his death in 1681, It is built in the shape of a rotunda, built on 1, 000, 000 wooden piles (after Palladio), and dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The building in front of it is the Italian Customs House.
