An elephant pulls a Chance Vought Corsair into position on a Fleet Air Arm airfield in India. The skill and strength of the elephant in manoeuvring large objects was particularly useful in the Far East where there were few good roads. The American Vought F4U Corsair was designed and operated as a carrier-based fighter aircraft, that saw service in World War II. In 1943, the Royal Navy received its first batch of 95 Vought F4U-1s, given the designation 'Corsair [Mark] I', with the first squadrons were assembled and trained on the U.S. East Coast.
