His witch-finding career began in March 1644 and lasted until his retirement in 1647. Hopkins is believed to have been responsible for the deaths of 300 women. He died in 1647, probably of pleural tuberculosis, at the age of 27. No artist credited.

RMR4X6B4–Colchester Castle, Essex, England, is a largely complete Norman castle with the largest keep ever built in Britain and the largest surviving example in Europe. The castle was ordered by William the Conqueror and building began between 1069 and 1076. The castle has had various uses, including a county prison, where in 1645 the self-styled Witchfinder General, Matthew Hopkins interrogated and imprisoned suspected witches. In 1648, during the Second English Civil War, the Royalist leaders Sir Charles Lucas and Sir George Lisle were executed there, as was the Quaker James Parnell in 1656.
