The Semenovsky Platz trotting track was on the river Neva, opposite the palace and racecourse of Tsarskoe Zelo. Trotting was a winter sport, and trots were also held on the frozen river (compare trotting to skeleton sleighs on the Chicago River in 1855, described p.241).
