Stirling Castle, a Scots royal fortress, occupied by the English, was under siege by the Scottish army. Edward II of England assembled a formidable force to relieve it. This attempt failed, and his army was defeated in a pitched battle by a smaller army commanded by Robert I of Scotland.

RFGA6PHM–Charles I was king of England, Scotland, and Ireland from 1625-1649. He was of the Stuart House. His father was James I. Civil and religious liberties caused much turmoil during his reign. Charles surrendered to Scottish army in 1646 and then became prisoner of the English. He was tried and the court found him guilty of treason and he was beheaded. Here, in this illustration by Edward Dalziel, he is shown taking leave of his children before his execution. His son later reigned as Charles II. This drawing accompanied Dickens' account of the tale in his book 'A Child's History of England.'

RM2CWBCTE–Captain John Augustus Wood, Bushire, Persia, 1856 by L Edwards. John Wood was a Scottish recipient of the Victoria Cross, and captain in the 20th Bombay Native Infantry, Indian Army, during the Anglo-Persian War of 1856-1857. Captain Wood led a Grenadier Company which led the assault on the fort of Bushire. He was hit by seven musket balls but continued to lead the attack. He survived and later rose to the rank of colonel.
