Jul. 07, 1961 - German more-purpose research reactor for Karlsruhe In Karlsruhe, West-Germany, Minister Balke announced the building of a research and testing reactor with a thermic capacity of 200,000 kilo-watt. The reactor is to be erected in Karlsruhe. This is a more-purpose research reactor of the Siemens-Schuckert-Works which is to produce electricity, to test burning elements etc. It will be an entire German project and it is a, so far, unique kind of reactor in the Western world. Two technicians clad in anti-contamination clothing manipulate a shim safety control rod in a water canal in the hot laboratory. The twenty- five foot deep water provided shielding from the radiation, yet still enabled visible contact with the research experiments. The water also allowed the underwater transfer of irradiated materials from the reactor to the hot laboratory for inspection. Moving materials by canal reduced the need for lead transfer casks, though they were still needed when the radioactive materials were taken out of the water. The pressure tank was shipped to Plum Brook via railway, and transported to the reactor facility on a flatbed truck. The tank was then rolled to a crane, which lifted it into place at the center of the unfinished quadrant area. Several pipes jutted out from the tank. Technicians work on the research reactor 'Wendelstein 7-X' at the Max Planck Institute of Plasma Physics in Greifswald, Germany, 23 January 2013. The reactor will be used for tests on nuclear fusions which are supposed to mirror the processes by which atomic nuclei fuse on the sun and release energy. After environmental protection groups and the green Party voiced security concerns the institute will now operate under the greatest possible transparency.
