RMMX08B0–King John pleading with the papal legate Pandulf Verraccio for a reconciliation with the church, following a dispute with Pope Innocent III that led to the king's excommunication in November 1209. The dispute began over the appointment of the Archbishop of Canterbury after the death of Hubert Walter, with the King and Pope Innocent favoured their own candidates. John saw it as an abrogation of his rights as monarch, but under mounting political pressure, John's and the papal terms for submission were accepted in the presence of the papal legate in May 1213 at the Templar Church at Dover.

He was born and raised in England by Richard, and therefore many consider him the first foreign king of Germany. Henry was crowned King of Sicily in 1212, so that Frederick could pursue his claim to the crown of Germany, as an agreement between Frederick and Pope Innocent III had specified that Germany and Sicily should not be united under one ruler. When the Pope died in 1216, Frederick reassumed the title of King of Sicily a year later and made Henry the Duke of Swabia instead.
