Central Africa: 'Female Elephant Pursued with Javelins, Protecting Her Young'. Illustration by David Livingstone (19 March 1913 - 1 May 1873), 1857. Elephant ivory has been exported from Africa and Asia for centuries with records going back to the 14th century BCE. Throughout the colonisation of Africa ivory was removed, often using slaves to carry the tusks, to be used for piano keys, billiard balls and other expressions of exotic wealth. Ivory hunters were responsible for wiping out elephants in North Africa perhaps about 1,000 years ago and in much of South Africa in the 19th century. Tanzania: A young Swahili woman in Dar es Salaam, c. 1900. In the late 19th century, Imperial Germany conquered the regions that are now Tanzania (minus Zanzibar), Rwanda, and Burundi, and incorporated them into German East Africa. During World War I, an invasion attempt by the British was thwarted by German General Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck, who then mounted a drawn out guerrilla campaign against the British. The post–World War I accords and the League of Nations charter designated the area a British Mandate, except for a small area in the northwest, which was ceded to Belgium. Kenya: Ivory porters carrying elephant tusks at Fort Jesus, Mombasa, c. 1922. Elephant ivory has been exported from Africa and Asia for centuries with records going back to the 14th century BC. Throughout the colonisation of Africa ivory was removed, often using slaves to carry the tusks, to be used for piano keys, billiard balls and other expressions of exotic wealth. Ivory hunters were responsible for wiping out elephants in North Africa perhaps about 1,000 years ago, in much of South Africa in the 19th century and most of West Africa by the end of the 20th century.
