Caesar’s death did not, as Brutus had expected, restore the republic. instead, it rent the world with civil war. Brutus himself was finally defeated at Philippi by the friends of Caesar under Marc Antony. Finding himself deserted and about to be taken prisoner, Brutus threw himself upon his own sword. Antony, looking at the dead body, said, “This was the noblest Roman of them all!”
