RM2HBEHYJ–An old engraving showing the distillation apparatus needed to manufacture synthetic magenta (mauve) dye from coal tar in the mid 1800s. It is from a Victorian book of the 1890s on discoveries and inventions during the 1800s. The furnace is on the right and the cooling vessel left. Sir William Henry Perkin (1838–1907) was a British chemist and entrepreneur best known for his discovery of the first commercial synthetic organic dye, mauveine, made from aniline, aged just 18. This marked the beginning of a revolution in organic chemistry, with dyes, drugs, explosives, fertilizers, plastics etc.
