Matthew Calbraith Perry was a Commodore of the U.S. Navy who compelled the opening of Japan to the West with the Convention of Kanagawa in 1854, when he threatened to bombard Edo (Tokyo) with his ships should they resist. Perry had commanded ships in several wars, including the War of 1812 and the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). His advocacy for the modernisation of the U.S. Navy led to him being called 'The Father of the Steam Navy'.

Pilgrimage maps of Jerusalem began to appear in the 1200s. Here English Benedictine monk, Matthew Paris, depicts the journey from London to Jerusalem. The map appears in versions of Paris’s Chronica Maiora, his history of the world from its creation to 1253. It appears in a linear style, with folios pasted back to back, and may have originally been a single long strip map.

Parry's first voyage in 1819 was one of the most important in the exploration of the North-West Passage. On board the Helca, with second-in-command Matthew Liddon on the Griper, Parry established that a westward route existed through Lancaster Sound. When the sea froze Parry's crew wintered on the south coast of Melville Island in Winter Harbour, where they stayed for 10 months until the ice melted.
