RM2ATWEFC–The Book of Margery Kempe the earliest known autobiography written in English created circa 1440. Margery Kempe (c.1373-c.1438) was an illiterate Christian mystic and dictated her biography to 3 different amanuensis. The only surviving copy of the manuscript is held by the British Library in London. The book is in non-chronological order and reveals Margery was racked by guilt for a sinful past, had visions of Jesus, devils and demons and went on extensive pilgrimages in the Holy Land and Europe. In 1417 she was arrested and imprisoned for heresy before being exonerated by an Archbishop.
