RM2DH7E69–An old engraving of syringe engine used in fighting fires in the 16th century. It is from a Victorian book of the 1880s. This mobile device was filled with water – here with a scoop from a barrel. It fired the water through a nozzle – the jet would not be at any great pressure. A squirt or fire syringe is a firefighting pump – hand squirts and hand pumps were in use as early as the 2nd century BC. The fire pump was reinvented in Europe in the 1500s and 1600s. A syringe is a simple reciprocating pump consisting of a plunger or piston that fits tightly within a cylindrical tube or barrel.
