RMMC6MH1–SAINTS - STANISLAUS OF CRACOW Saint Stanislaus was born of a nole family at Szczepanow, in Poland, in 1010, and was consecrated Bishop of Cracow at the age of 62. King Boleslaus II committed many unjust acts, for which Stanislaus had him excommunicated. When, in spite of this, the King entered the church during a service, Stanislaus cancelled the proceedings. Gregory was at the castle of Canossa, high in the mountains in north-central Italy and let Henry, clad in the thin robe of a penitent (as seen here), stand in the courtyard in A.D. 1077 for three days. At length, Gregory granted Henry absolution but only on humiliating terms of submission.

RMP9H0Y9–The Great Seal of Henry VIII (1491 – 1547), King of England from 1509 until his death and the second Tudor monarch, succeeding his father, Henry VII. He is best known for his six marriages, in particular his efforts to have his first marriage, to Catherine of Aragon, annulled. His disagreement with the Pope on the question of such an annulment led Henry to initiate the English Reformation, separating the Church of England from papal authority. He appointed himself the Supreme Head of the Church of England and dissolved convents and monasteries, for which he was excommunicated.

RMMX08EF–John III Comyn, aka Lord of Badenoch, Lord of Lochaber and the Red Comyn (1269–1306), was a Scottish nobleman during the First War of Scottish Independence, and Guardian of Scotland during the Second Interregnum. Comyn was killed by Robert the Bruce (1274 – 1329) before the high altar of the Greyfriars Church in Dumfries on 10 February 1306 following an argument. Although Bruce was excommunicated by the Pope he moved quickly to seize the throne and was crowned and remained king of Scots on 25 March 1306 until his death in 1329.
