It was commissioned by King Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia in 1844 and built in Italian style by Ludwig Persius. Until 1990, the building stood directly on the German-German border. The barriers of the Berlin Wall ran on the church grounds. In 1990 the ensemble has been classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
