An old engraving of Pall Mall, London, England, UK in the mid 1700s. Pall Mall is a street in the St James's area of the City of Westminster. This view shows shops and shoppers with horses and carriages. The street's name is derived from 'pall-mall', a ball game played there during the 1600s. A new road was built on the site of the old pall-mall court, and opened in 1661. It was named Catherine Street, after Catherine of Braganza, wife of Charles II, but was better known as Pall Mall Street or the Old Pall Mall. The early 1900s caption reads: 'CAPTURE OF THE JACOBITE LEADERS IN ' THE FIFTEEN.'—The exiled Stuart kings of England several times endeavored to regain their throne. Their supporters were called Jacobites, from Jacobus, the Latin form of King James' name. One of the most serious of the venal rebellions was in 1715, hence called 'The Fifteen.' John, Earl of Mar, roused the Scotch Jacobites; but they were betrayed and their leaders were seized in an inn [seen here], where they had gathered. An old engraving of The Lord Mayor's Show procession, London, England, UK in the mid 1700s. The Lord Mayor's Show is one of the best-known annual events in London as well as one of the longest-established, dating back to the 1500s. A new lord mayor is appointed every year, and the public parade that takes place as his or her inauguration ceremony reflects that this was once one of the most prominent offices in England.
