He was also a five-time Olympic medalist in swimming who competed in the 1912, 1920, and 1924 Summer Olympics, as well as being an alternate for the U.S. water polo team at the 1932 Olympics. This famous spot in surfing history was home of the Corona del Mar Surfboard Club, formed in 1928 with members including Hawaii's Duke Kahanamoku, Redondo's Tom Blake, Gene 'Tarzan' Smith, and Gerard and Art Vultee of the Los Angeles Athletic Club. It was also the site of one of the first surfing championships on the US mainland, the Pacific Coast Surfboard Championship, which began in 1928.
