A race official by the finishing line of the track with the chequered flag raised as the winning car comes down the finishing straight in front of the crowd. Opened in 1927 for motorcycles, it was 1937 when 20 cars entered the first London Grand Prix. Later that year, the BBC broadacst the first ever televised motor racing from the circuit. The final meeting was in 1972 when it was felt that racing around a park at speeds of over 100 mph was not safe.
