An old c1800's coloured view of Lacock Abbey, Wiltshire. The house is built over the old cloisters of the original Augustian nunnery founded in the early 13th century by Ela, Countess of Salisbury, as a nunnery. It was later converted to a house by Sir William Sharington High Sheriff and member of parliament . He was a conspirator courtier of Henry VIII wh oalso served as master (and embezzler) of the Bristol Mint. During the 19th century it was the residence of William Henry Fox Talbot who in 1835 made the earliest surviving photographic camera negative, an image of one of the windows.
