Corrie ten Boom (1892-1983) was a Dutch watchmaker and Christian arrested by the Nazis for hiding Jews during World War II. She was imprisoned at Scheveningen when resistance materials and extra ration cards were found in her home. After trial, she was moved to two concentration camps. Her eventual release from Ravensbrück concentration camp (she was later told) was the result of a clerical error and a week later the other women in her age group were sent to the gas chambers. The model of the Camp is laid out in concrete on the ground. The Camp, also known as Konzentrationslager Herzogenbosch, is now a National Memorial and was opened by Queen Beatrix on 18 April 1990. The whole area of the Camp which operated in 1943/44 stretched back as far as the nearby villages. There are now recreated wash rooms and toilets, an Information Centre, sleeping quarters and the crematorium with original ovens.
