The United States is among the six countries who are using Canadian-built de Havilland aircraft in Antarctica during the International Geophysical Year. Developed by the Bristol Aeroplane Company, under a Ministry of Supply contract, the plane was powered by four turboprop engines and was designed for civil aviation use as a medium-to-long range aircraft for passenger flights across the British Commonwealth. Its' development however, coincided with that of the jet engine and so after being introduced in 1957 with BOAC, production ended shortly after in 1960, with only 85 having been built.
