Mr. George Spedding, who was landlord of the Angel for around twenty-eight years,including long after the coaching days were over.

The Old Fox stood at the junction of the two great branches of the Great North Road and thus drew custom from those travelling to Wetherby, Catterick, Bowes, and Appleby, and the other by Tadcaster, York, Northallerton, and Darlington

Named after a 14th century peasants revolt leader, it was originally a coaching inn and believed to be the highest pub in London. Because of WW2 damage, in 1964, the pub was rebuilt, being redesigned and enlarged with a new facia to mimic the style of an 18th century coaching inn. In 2002 the building was converted into luxury flats and in 2008 a gym replaced what had become a ground floor restaurant, a sign of the times in modern Britain.
