In 1853 Sepoys throughout India were issued with a new rifle, the Pattern 1853 Enfield rifled musket. It was believed that the cartridges that were standard issue with this rifle were greased with lard (pork fat) which was regarded as unclean by Muslims, or tallow (beef fat), regarded as sacred to Hindus.

RM2HN6PM7–A 19th century image of the many armed Hindu deity DURGA, one the consorts of Siva. She is depicted thrusting a spear into Mahisha chief of the demons. It is interesting to see that in this depiction, Mahisha is inthe form of a European with his lion, clearly having a reference to the British Raj in India. A great festival held each year in Durga's honour is called the Durga Puja.

The sun set on scenes like this and on the end of the British Raj in India 50 years ago, at the stroke of midnight on August 14, 1947. But the initial scenes of jubilation across the country quickly turned to horror. Thousands died as battles erupted between Muslims and Hindus in the two new countries of India and Pakistan, created through the partition of the religiously-divided sub-continent. This map was produced at the height of British Imperial power and shows direct British rule extending all the way from Iran (Persia) to Thailand (Siam). Most of the contiguous Indian Ocean littoral, from South Africa to Singapore and Australia, was also under British administration or de facto control. It is relevant to note that the map shows Sikkim extending north into the present-day territory of China's Tibetan Autonomous Region. Similarly Darjeeling is shown in eastern Nepal.

RM2B01MXG–Burma/Myanmar: A Bamar official dressed in silk 'pasoe' and fur jacket to indicate rank, late 19th century. The British conquest of Burma began in 1824 in response to a Burmese attempt to invade India. By 1886, and after two further wars, Britain had incorporated the entire country into the British Raj. To stimulate trade and facilitate changes, the British brought in Indians and Chinese, who quickly displaced the Burmese in urban areas. To this day Rangoon and Mandalay have large ethnic Indian populations. Railways and schools were built, as well as a large number of prisons.
