Scipio Africanus, (236 - 183 BCE), was a Roman general noted for his victory over the Carthaginian leader Hannibal in the great Battle of Zama (202 bce), that ended the Second Punic War. Around 207BCE, following a succesful campaign in Spain, Scipio asked the Roman senate for supplies and an army to march on Carthage itself. The Roman senate refused the request, so Scipio raised an army himself and threatened the Roman senate with an appeal to the Roman people for support of his campaign. Fearing his popularity, they gave him command of Sicily to use as his base of operations.
