RM2T9X59R–Following a chase of five days and 1,750 miles the Bismarck, the most powerful World War two battleship of the German Navy was caught in the North Atlantic and subjected to torpedo attacks from the Fleet Air arm and Royal Navy destroyers. In the picture by Frank Mason, the Royal Navy cruiser H.M.S Dorsetshire launches the torpedos that further damaged the vessel. On the 27th May 1941, the ship was scuttled to prevent her being boarded by the British, and to allow the ship to be abandoned so as to limit further casualties.

The ship was a requisitioned Fyffes banana boat, refitted in 1942 for the passenger and cargo service from the UK to Canada. According to Captain Samuel Browne: 'We saw much action while in convoy and had many narrow escapes from collision. It was a great relief when the war ended, when one could carry steaming lights at night and do away with black-out precautions.' Capt. Browne had been torpedoed in both World Wars.
