The old fort and Fortified House at Bagamoyo was built by an Arab around 1860, then owned by a wealthy Ismaili trader called Sewa Haji who sold it to the German Colonial power in 1894. From 1887 to 1891, Bagamoyo was the capital of German East Africa.
