The area of Shanghai today known as Tianzifang was, during the colonial era the French Concession Area, and even today some of its old buildings still retain something of a French atmosphere. The area is typified by its maze of narrow lanes, lined with brick houses and apartments, now mainly filled with souvenir shops and cafes. Tianzifang is now one of Shanghai's most popular tourist attractions.
