This image shows the core of the Milky Way emerging from a blaze of light pollution and arcing over the horizon towards the ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle. I think this is a good example of the extent to which light pollution can affect our experience when viewing the night sky. The blaze of light appears to be coming from the nearby village of Craster but the bulk of it is actually from towns further south such as Amble, Ashington, Blyth and Newcastle upon Tyne, all of which are way beyond Craster. Amble is the closest at around 13 miles distance while the others are all 25+ miles, incredible that light pollution from towns so far away can still have such an impact on the sky up at this castle.
