During medieval times abbots of abbeys and monasteries had refuges built inside walled towns where they could stay during a visit to that town or on their way to their often extensive estates. In times of war, these refuges also offered protection. Willem Sarens had this building erected in 1533-1544. Later on it became (among other things) a house of refuge of Saint Trond's Abbey, established by the Benedictine Abbey (1611-1859), to improve contact between the abbey and the archbishop. Since 1926 this beautiful building is part of the archbishop's palace to which it is linked by means of a covered bridge.
