Jan. 1, 1960 Paris, France EDWARD VIII had met and fallen in love with a married American woman, Mrs WALLIS SIMPSON. Edward had to choose between the Crown and Mrs Simpson who, as a twicedivorced woman, would not have been acceptable as Queen. In 1937, Edward was created Duke of Windsor and married Wallis Simpson in a ceremony in France. Edward VIII is the only British monarch to have voluntarily relinquished the throne.
