The Steven's Croft Power Station formally opened on March 20th. 2008 and the 44-MW facility is now the largest, wood-fired power station in the United Kingdom. The power station is located near Lockerbie in southern Scotland and is owned and operated by E.ON UK. Steven's Croft Power Station burns forestry residues and willow that is grown as an energy crop for fuel. The use of wood and forestry residues is considered carbon-neutral and can be sustained over the long term by replanting trees. The facility incorporates a bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) boiler to efficiently burn the wood to create heat for steam generation.
