RMFKKP8P–The penny sit-up, operated by the Salvation Army, one of the first homeless shelters to be created for the people of Blackfriars, London, England in the Victorian era. In exchange for a penny, clients would be allowed to sit on a bench in a reasonably warm room all night long, but were not allowed to lie down and sleep on the bench.

RM2E25DY4–A Victorian photograph of a horse-drawn Church Army caravan (Norwich No 1) with two uniformed ‘officers’ in Norfolk c.1900. The caravan is covered in Christian sayings, as is a banner the men hold. The Church Army was an organisation of lay evangelists within the Church of England, founded on the model of the Salvation Army in the slums of London in 1882 by Wilson Carlile. The evangelists on these vans would take services in schools and open-air meetings. Initially these vans were pulled by horses but later became motorised.

RM2J7C79J–A 1953 advert for The Church Army. The advert appeared in a magazine published in the UK in June that year – the issue was a special edition, published to mark the coronation of Queen Elizabeth. The illustration shows a royal procession and it requests donations for its work with the words ‘A New Reign’. The Church Army began as an organisation of lay evangelists within the Church of England, founded on the model of the Salvation Army in the slums of London in 1882 by Wilson Carlile. Later it became mainly concerned with social work & rehabilitation – vintage 1950s graphics for editorial use.

RMFKKP93–Men at the 'four penny coffin', aka 'coffin house', one of the first homeless shelters to be created for the people of central London, England, operated by the Salvation Army during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Customers received food and shelter, were allowed to lie down flat on their backs and sleep in a coffin shaped wooden box and given a tarpaulin for covering. From Living London, published c.1901

The illustration shows guardsmen on horseback. The request is for a ‘Coronation Gift’ of money to assist in their charitable work. Terms that would probably be no longer used are included, such as ‘training’ for ‘neglectful mothers’.
