When this relief was exhibited in Paris in 1878, the German scholar Wilhelm von Bode attributed it to Agostino di Duccio.[1] His identification was accepted by all major scholars; the subject, on the other hand, puzzled many.[2] Eugène Piot referred to it as a scene from the life of Saint Catherine, and he was followed by Émile Bertaux,
