It is presented every other year to a maximum of 36 nurses or voluntary aide throughout the world for exceptional devotion to the sick and wounded. Miss Elvidge nursed in Malaya during the emergency between 1953 and 1955. In the 50' and 60's and the early 70's she served in Gambia, Cyprus, Uganda, Nyasa-land, Kenya, Laos and the New Hebrides.
