The 19th-century mining town of Mineral de Pozos (also known as "Pozos") became a virtual ghost town in the early 20th century. It was declared a National Historic Treasure by the Mexican government in 1982. It has come back to life recently as an artists' colony and tourist destination. The town is about one hour's drive from San Miguel de Allende.
