More information:

At 500 million years, the Machincang Mountain Range is the oldest rock formation in Malaysia and will soon officially be the first UNESCO GeoPark in South-East Asia. Located off the north-western coast of Peninsula, the Langkawi GeoPark is located on Langkawi Island the largest of a formation of 99 islands. A "World GeoPark" is a designation granted to an area unique for its geological and.or geomorphological heritage in terms of scientific rarity, aesthetic appeal and educational value. The key functions of a GeoPark are to protect the geological heritage, promote geology to the public and to use geology and other aspects of its natural and cultural heritage to promote sustainable economic development (normally through tourism). Formed in 2000, the European GeoPark network established some 17 European GeoParks before they were integrated into a UNESCO-endorsed "World GeoPark" or "UNESCO GeoPark." There were 50 listed GeoParks in September 2006.
