Rome. Italy. This image was captured from the ancient Roman road known as The Appian Way (Via Appia Antica) located in the Park of the Appia Antica in Southern Rome. A great feat of Roman engineering, the Appian Way was celebrated as “the queen of the long roads” in antiquity and is named after Roman Censor Appius Claudius Caecus who completed a section of the road to the south in 312BC. The road which was originally built for military purposes eventually linked Rome to Brindisi, Apulia, in southeast Italy and opened up trade routes with Greece and the Eastern Mediterranean. The section in Rome is lined with monuments and tombs from its past. A description caption of this photo will be added shortly. Please contact Steven Sklifas for more information.
