Interior of small (2, 000 gallon) septic tank. This tank serves a small community of 4 cottages, in southern England, which is not connected to the main drain and water treatment pipes. The tank is divided into 2 chambers. Household wastewater enters one chamber in which solids are allowed to settle whilst the liquid component flows into the second chamber. The liquid leaves the second chamber via a gravel or sand-filled soakaway or leach field, which allows it to soak into the surrounding soil whilst retaining any remaining solids.
