H Samuel's jewellers in the new Arndale Centre, Doncaster, South Yorkshire, 1969. The new Arndale Shopping Centre in Doncaster opened in 1969. The new generation of shopping centres was set to revolutionise shopping in the same way that the development of the supermarket did in the post war years. This new development in Doncaster has undergone a few refurbishments over the years and the controversial statue of the abstract naked couple was rumoured to have found a home in later years in the garden of one of Doncaster's suburban houses, but H Samuel, Boots and British Home Stores still occupied the same shop units some forty years after the photograph was taken.
