Ethnic Russian and former soldier in the Soviet 14th Army stands guard at the border between the breakaway state of Transnistria and the Ukraine during the “Warof Transnistria” in 1992. Transnistria along the Dniester River on the Western border of the Ukraine and Moldova is 1/3 Russian, 1/3 Ukrainian and 1/3 Moldavian. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union (USSR) separatists who, unlike Moldova, wished to stay with the USSR or Russia fought an armed conflict with Moldova in 1992. Currently Transnistria along with Nagorno-Karabakh, Abkhazia and Ossetia are considered “Frozen Conflict Zones” in the former Soviet Union. Photo by Chuck Nacke
