Flourescein stain on the cornea following a corneal abrasion caused by a baby's uncut fingernails scratching the surface of the eye. Wood's light can make flourescein staining more obvious. An antibiotic ointment will help healing by providing lubrication and discouraging bacterial growth. Corneal abrasions are acutely painful and cause watering of the eye and photophobia. Common causes include foreign bodies e.g. grit under the eyelid, scratches from vegetation and use of contact lenses. Patching of the eye is no longer advised. Use of local anaesthetic drops is also discouraged as this delays corneal healing.
