Carry Nation, the Kansas Saloon Smasher, c1900s. Carry Nation (1848-1911) was an American temperance campaigner renowned for vandalising saloons with a hatchet. She became a committed opponent of alcohol after the end of her first marriage, to Dr Charles Gloyd, who was an alcoholic.
