Nob Hill is one of San Francisco's forty-four hills and one of the seven original hills settled in the 19th century. It was originally called California Hill, after California Street, which climbs up steeply from the east, then descends steeply to the west. After the 1850sit was referred to as Nob Hill after Central Pacific Railroad's 'Big Four' built mansions there, joined by other tycoons building mansions because the hill's views and central position. The name is a corruption of noble, in the sense 'newly-rich'. An early morning view looking west along California Street at its intersection with Leavenworth.
