In the second weekend of November for 5 days the people of Benidorm, Spain pay tribute to the Virgen del Suffrage and San Jaime the Apostle. The main representatives of these parties are the Queens and Senior Women and Children for a year that are delivered to the Virgin. During a storm in March 1740 a ship ran aground in the Bay of Benidorm. To prevent contagious diseases the ship was set on fire and afterwards some children found a statue of the Virgin in the ashes., which was taken to a prominent place where a chapel was built. There is a re-enactment of this event every November on the Playa Pontiente, which is at a time when the returning fishermen from the town "almadrava" would be able to join in the celebrations of the finding of the patron saint, the "Mare de Deu of Sofrage". All the local "Penyas" come together at this time join with friends for the proccesions, masses, music, and other events, day and night, organised by the Festival Committee Major Patron. On the Thursday after the Spanish celebrations the British holidaymakers hold a fancy dress street party in Benidorm New Town which is attended by thousands of tourists and causes the streets to be closed as people mill about to show off their costumes and enjoy the fun.
