The Circus Maximus in Rome is the best known building used by the Romans for chariot races. Each charioteer guided his team of horses around the spina, a platform set in the middle of the arena to separate the going and returning of the racers. It was the largest such stadium in the roman World, measuring 2, 037 feet long and 387 feet wide. This illustration dates to 1882.
