Hundreds of the thousands of Northern Gannets, Morus bassanus, which nest on Ailsa Craig, a granitic extrusion island nine miles off the Ayrshire mainland in the Irish Sea. It is currently a bird sanctuary managed by the RSPB, particularly for its Northern Gannet colony. It is the site of a famous and successful rat eradication programme in the 1990s, since when the numbers of species and of individual birds has risen considerably.
